Selmer Clarinet 9 Overview

Clarion, clarin and the Italian clarino are all derived from the medieval term claro which stated an early form of trumpet. This is most likely the origin of the Italian clarinetto, itself a diminutive of clarino, and as a result of the European equivalents equivalent to clarinette in French or the German Klarinette. According to Johann Gottfried Walther, writing in 1732, the clarification for the name is that "it sounded from far off not unlike a trumpet". The English form clarinet is found as early as 1733, and the now archaic clarionet seems from 1784 until the early years of the 20th century. The cylindrical bore is essentially guilty for the clarinet's exceptional timbre, which varies among its three main registers, called the chalumeau, clarion, and altissimo. The tone terrific can vary significantly with the clarinetist, music, device, mouthpiece, and reed.

Virtuoso performers toured Europe and inspired composers corresponding to Spohr and Weber to write down down clarinet concertos and chamber works. Instruments continued to be made from boxwood, though makers experimented with silver and brass anyway. Someclarinets were made from cocuswood, a tropical wood found mostly in Jamaica. French makers began making clarinets out of ebony, a heavy, dark wood from Africa, in the mid nineteenth century. But progressively the favourite material became African blackwood, it is comparable to ebony but less heavy and brittle. Most modern clarinet bodies are created from African blackwood Dalbergia melanoxylon. There are definitely many different trees in the African blackwood genus, paying homage to black cocus, Mozambique ebony, grenadilla, and East African ebony. It is this heavy, dark wood that offers clarinets their characteristic color. Inexpensive clarinets designed for school kids may be made from artificial resins. Very every so often, clarinets are manufactured out of silver or brass. The clarinet mouthpiece is made from a diversity of hard rubber called ebonite.
